Re: Musings GreyWolf Mon Aug 17 19:28:51 1998 Topaz*p*When I was a child I raised rabbits. To me they were pets, just lots of them, to my father they were meat for sale when they got old enough. I learned that usually in about every 2 liters there was one bunny that was rejected by its mother or by its siblings for some reason. At first I would try to protect the "runt" but it was to no avail and I learned that this "one" was either too small, or sickly or malformed in some way and I was not going to effect the outcome, just prolong the event. It was a hard lesson for a little child to accept but I had no choice. It is my nature to fight for the underdog but when nature makes up its mind, it seems to be a hard thing to change.*p*I have seen the same thing in dogs and cats, the weak one is singled out and left to die to provide more for the healthier ones so that they have a better chance of getting a good start on their lives. It does not really seem fare but it works and has worked for millions of years.*p*If I think about it, I would not be here if I would have been born into a large family and only natures rules applied. I have high blood pressure and rather poor eyes so in all likely hood I would have been singled out rather soon to be culled from the family. But since I dont live strictly by natures rules, I do survive rather well but only by human kinds intervention thru gadgets (glasses) and drugs to keep my rouge blood pressure under check. I went around nature in a sense.*p*I would add that the idea of the sacrifice of the one for the good of the many has been around for a very very long time. I agree with Beirdd, we sacrifice in many ways each day, by choice and by circumstance, many may seem trivial but they really are not as they can affect not only ourselves but many others. For instance, If I perform a personal sacrifice and do not attend a festival that I would really like to attend, I do effect others, I dont use the gas that someone sells to make a living, I dont buy food or other items that others again use as a part of their living, so in those small ways, my decisions do effect many others. It is interesting to look at how this all cascades far beyond our immediate surroundings. *p*Just some of my musings.*p* Musings TopazOwl 140 Sun Aug 16 21:19:30 1998
