It *br*: is my nature to fight for the underdog but when nature makes *br*: up its mind, it seems to be a hard thing to change.*p* It *is* a hard thing to change, at some levels. And yet Howard did it. And I have in the past been able to do it, too. And basically, that is what some of us recognize as the heart of magic. I suppose it is all in what one is willing to give; how much the universe asks for, that decides the outcome. As Beirdd said, it is the acceptance of the necessary sacrifice of the Self that is most hard for us. And doesn't that bring up the wondering of what makes a hero? But we'll go there some other time...*p*: I would add that the idea of the sacrifice of the one for *br*: the good of the many has been around for a very very long *br*: time. *p* Of course it has. It is the way of the natural world and has been going on since the world was born. That was part of my point. (In fact, many creation myths show that the world was created from a primal sacrifice. Therefore, it is believed that without the repetition of the original pattern in some form, the world would stop. That is the essence of ritual -- ensuring the continuation of the pattern.)*p*: I agree with Beirdd, we sacrifice in many ways each *br*: day, by choice and by circumstance, many may seem trivial *br*: but they really are not as they can affect not only *br*: ourselves but many others. *p* I probably should tell you that Beirdd and I have had this conversation many times. It is an ongoing topic between us, and it has been interesting to see how our ideas have evolved with time, experience, and deeper examination. But we both have always agreed that those everyday sacrifices that are asked of us in our choices and day-to-day lives are just as important to the world as one we might give with ritual intent. While those kinds of sacrifices are also imperative and constitute our life lessons, well, that isn't quite what I was talking about this time, except in a very general sense. :-)*p* Discussing our thoughts helps us all to grow in our understanding of each other and our world. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to very briefly explain the path that resulted in this writing (and which will probably result in more), and I am looking forward to hearing more thoughts on the subject.*p*Leigh Re: Musings GreyWolf 143 Mon Aug 17 19:28:51 1998
