Triad # 78:*p*"Tréde conaittig brethemnas: gáis, féige, fiss."*p*Meyer translation:*p*"Three things which judgement demands: wisdom, penetration, knowledge."*p*Now, here the term "brethemnas" actually does mean judgement, as in a legal ruling. *p*"Féige" is given as penetration, and derives from the word "féig," which has the connotations of "keen vision" and "clear sight," and refers to these things also in relation to mental or moral qualities. In other words, the special ability to penetrate through the bullhockey or see to the truth of the matter -- the ability to judge moral character.*p*"Fiss" is knowledge that seems to have connotations of scientific knowledge. For instance, "féige fiss" is given as "knowledge of science," penetrating knowledge?*p*Therefore, I believe this triad is saying that a judge must have his own wisdom, a clear view into the souls of men, and a knowledge of the Brehon science, that is, law. *p*Discussion invited. :-)*p*Leigh
