The Ogham and Runes were used in a simialr manner.  There are several instances where Ogham are placed on objects to enhance their power.  The Ogham combine the letters of a charm by inherently having a stemline that links all of the letters.  I've seen bones, jewels and silver objects with such Ogham on them.
