Re: A Stand on Druids as Priests Searles Wed Sep 20 20:29:01 2000 Here's what a Roman Catholic lay person had to say in the editorial letters of our hometown paper, the Sun-herald Editorial. I think it shows the same caring spirit for others that I hope we all share:*p*Not all Catholics share official's view*p*As a lifelong Catholic who loves his faith, I wish to apologize to all*br*those of other religions for a recent statement by a Vatican official.*br*Not all of us Catholics believe that "the Catholic Church is the sole*br*path to spiritual salvation for all humanity" or that "other religions are*br*gravely deficient."*p*My wife and I were greatly embarrassed by this statement. Jesus*br*Christ gave us two commandments: to love God and to love our*br*neighbor as ourselves. In contrast, this recent statement, which is*br*arrogant and abusive in tone, does not show love of our neighbors of*br*different religions. Further, when asked who was our neighbor, Christ*br*gave the example of the Good Samaritan, and praised him, even*br*though the Samaritan observed a different practice of religion than*br*Christ.*p*This recent statement further declares that "the principals of tolerance*br*and respect for freedom promoted by the reforms of the Second*br*Vatican Council are today being manipulated and wrongfully*br*surpassed." This entire statement, in itself, clearly shows the real need*br*for more tolerance and respect for freedom, not for less.*p*There are enough serious problems facing all God's people*br*throughout the entire world today. Solutions to these problems are far*br*better served by cooperation among all religions than by attempts to*br*accentuate differences in old dogmas.*p*JOHN McMANUS*br*Baton Rouge, La.*br* Re: A Stand on Druids as Priests Searles 708 Wed Sep 20 12:10:13 2000
