Re: Ogham Runes: A Misnomer??? mike Wed Mar 28 09:08:26 2001 ok, i sayd i wuz gonna be taking a 'sabbatical'.but it has not happened yet. anyway...*p*my understanding of oghams is similar to yours tal. i have also studied the runes..tho not asmuch as the oghams (not to say i am all that knowledgable about oghams). but, runes are norse, where oghams are irish (the two cultures are cousin cultures, which makes the runes and oghams sort of cousin systems.) but, the runes are pictograms, where i am not aware that the ogham depict anything in their design. both consist of lines, making them easy to carve into stone or onto wood. and with that, i think the similarities in the design aspects of both end.*p*and to further (what i see as )seperate the two systems..."rune" is actually a word..defined as "a song". in the kalevala..the stories in it are each called runes. i cannot recall how many, but there are alot. and each rune tells one of the legends. it is kind of like the book of ballymote or any of those manuscripts..just imagine each different story within the book called a rune..and that is the kalevala (to my limited knowledge of the book).*p*so to sum up..i think it is wrong to call oghams..runes*p*blessings*br*mike Ogham Runes: A Misnomer???
