The thonged sandle was sacrid because it incompassed the ancient symbol of life. Most wore what was climatically efficiant, but for religious or polite usage symbology was at the foremast. The Magi of Medievil times preferred white leather boots & that was probably in the tradition of the Celts/Druids. "keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God" from Ecclesiastes v.1 can be traced back to both Messapotamian & Egyptian litrature.
