Re: SummerSun: Samhain-Winter Solstice Issue Available Beirdd Thu Dec 21 21:54:55 2000 Ooo! Nothing like controversy to sell a paper! ;-)*p*When I asked for nominations for the Scoaties, I never set stipulations on the detail required by the nomination. As a result, some nominations were general descriptions of *types* of people encountered in the Pagan community, on- and off-line, while others named specific individuals. Subsequently, I communicated to a number of trusted advisors my concerns about the appropriateness of naming particular individuals as winners of an award that, though primarily intended to be humorous, follows the Bardic tradition of cutting both ways. Taking diverse counsel into account, I decided to couch the identities of individual winners in terms which would be recognized by the nominators while being appreciated as "types" by those more removed from the situations presented by the individual nominees.*p*To translate: viewing the "individuals" as either "types" or as actual persons fits the intent of the award. Personally, those who know me best would also recognize that I believe that any satire is meant, primarily, as a wake up call to the reader. The Scoaties are meant to be more a scalpel than a blade of war.*p*By voicing your concern you *have* taken the Druidic high road. I appreciate it. I would never attack you. Besides, you have at least a year before you are eligible to be nominated yourself! ;-)*p*--Beirdd*p*Stacey wrote,*br*: Perhaps I am getting sensitive in my old age, but with the *br*: exception of the first runner up for hypocritical pagan *br*: leaders, the other ones seemed to be personal attacks on *br*: people. I'm not quite sure who you are all talking about as *br*: I am relatively new at exploring the Summerlands' benefits *br*: (though I've been a member for a year now) and just kind of *br*: lurk on the newsgroups, but I would have thought the awards *br*: to have been more general.
