Re: Quarter Cakes Searles Sun Apr 15 01:21:31 2001 I think they were all oat cakes and maybe seasoned with appropriate herbs (for the season). I know she wrotes books called the Scpts' Kitchen and the Scots' Cellar. I only have the latter of these two books. I think the former might have the answer to your question in it.*p*J.A. MacCulloch tells of men baking a bammock cake of oats for a Bealtaine ritual concerning the "devoted." The man that received the blackened piece of this cake was the devoted (who was basically made the brute of verbal and physical abuse during the festival). This may well have replaced much earlier rituals where sacrifices were made.*p*Searles*p**br*Stacey wrote,*br*: I was reading in McNeill's The Silver Bough that Quarter *br*: Cakes were baked for each of the Quarter Days (Oimelc, *br*: Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain), and survives as a custom *br*: up to present day.
