Re: Religious Reich Rage Jenny jennyg@compuserve.com Tue Jul 27 20:29:07 1999 My word, what a foul individual! Makes you want to go out and wash off your computer screen after displaying that message! <g>*p*What I find perversely funny is his total ignorance about American history. The Founding Fathers never considered this a Christian nation -- Thomas Jefferson stated explicitly that the First Amendment was intended to cover non-Christian religions.*p*And as for the "one nation under God" thing... well, Mr. Schaeffer obviously isn't familiar with the Pledge of Allegience's history. When the Pledge was originally written, back in 1892, it said:*p*"I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands: one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."*p*In 1942, the words were changed to, "I pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands: one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."*p*It wasn't until 1954 that the phrase "under God" was added. During the height of the McCarthy Era, I might point out, when America was going through some of its foulest "witch" hunting...*p*The Baptist minister who wrote the original pledge was a much more tolerant and sensible Christian than your correspondent. He never insisted this country was his alone, or that non-Christians were somehow unpatriotic.*p*Jenny*br* Religious Reich Rage Deborah 191 Tue Jul 27 19:48:27 1999
