I ended up responding on Nemeton. Just to put my two cents (or 30 pieces of silver) in, here's what I sent that list:*p*[BTW: Jenny: thank you for your balanced and intelligent thoughts on this.]*p*It is certainly a praiseworthy desire of the Catholic Church to examine its history and to seek*br*to make amends for the historical and often horrendous failures and acts*br*of its members in its name.  I am certain the Church neither seeks nor expects such praise. It is*br*also an undertandable desire of the Pagan members of "The Committee for*br*the Pope's Millennium Apology" to jump on the list in celebration of their victimhood. I doubt*br*that there could ever be a non-Catholic organization anywhere that would*br*attract so much advice and assistance from the outside in searching its own soul!*p*It will be interesting to see who follows the Catholic Church's lead. Will it be the Jews*br*apologizing for the persecution of the early Church which resulted in the deaths*br*of many? Will it be the Pagans apologizing for the acts of their correligionists, the Romans, for*br*putting to death tens of thousands of Christians? Then, perhaps, it may*br*be the Pagans of Europe, the Buddhists of Asia, the animists of Africa and the Americas, the*br*Moslems of the Middle East, Africa, and Spain, the Protestants of England and*br*Germany, or the atheists of Mexico and the Communist Party who will be the first to apologize for*br*contributing in many brutal ways to the Catholic Martyrology.*p*But seriously, I know that 2000 (or is it 2001?) will not bring the Millennium of the Apology --*br*a thousand years of everyone apologizing to everyone else for things for*br*which they need a thousand years to apologize. It will probably simply be more of the same --*br*everyone fiddling while Rome burns. Too bad that the song remains the same.*br*A new tune would be nice, though.*p*Or will someone finally heed the geese who say of us, "What's good for the Pope is good for the*br*Pagan!"?*p*I doubt it.*p*--M.
