Re: Papal Apologies Jenny jennyg@compuserve.com Thu Oct 14 12:04:44 1999 : I'm sure there's more stewing inside me about this that *br*: hasn't risen to the surface yet, but I know the letter made *br*: me uncomfortable.*p*I think your points are excellent. (And by the way, it's nice knowing that other Pagans found the letter disturbing. I was starting to feel like I was the only one. <g>)*p*To give it credit, one of the things I liked about the letter was the fact that it *didn't* directly equate modern and early modern Witches. It referred to them as our spiritual ancestors, the people we draw inspiration from. And from one angle, I can see where someone might think that was enough to entitle us to ask for an apology. Not because we were the people who died in the Burning Times, but because we identify with them and can "represent" them, if you will. The apology is not to us, as Witches, but to the people we share a name with.*p*Yet I still can't sign it -- and your comments about the Continental Druids hit the problem on the head. As Pagans, our past isn't spotless either. Again, my problems center around singling one group of people out as especially blame-worthy. And I agree with Searles that getting on with our lives and building bridges is more important than apologies.*p*Jenny Re: Papal Apologies TopazOwl 220 Wed Oct 13 15:37:59 1999
