ANCIENT ASTRONOMIES -- A BIBLIOGRAPHY:

Aveni, Anthony F.
1995. Ancient Astronomers; St. Remy Press and Smithsonian Institute
An intro text with photographs in the Smithsonian _Exploring the Ancient World_ series.

Bauer, Brian S. and David S.P. Dearborn
1995. Astronomy and Empire in the Ancient Andes;  (HC) University of Texas Press, Austin, TX
1995. Astronomy and Empire in the Ancient Andes;  (PB)
Using information from Spanish invaders, current legends, and archaeology, the authors construct a
view of the ancient Incan calendar, and how they regarded celestial objects and portents. (May be dry reading for many.)

Brennan, Martin
1994. The Stones of Time : Calendars, Sundials, and Stone Chambers of Ancient Ireland; Inner Traditions International, Rochester, VT 216 pp.
Many illustrative diagrams, and informative text. Good discussion on ancient astronomy focusing
in on Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Recommended.

Burl, Aubrey
1985. Megalithic Brittany : A Guide to over 350 Ancient Sites and Monuments;  Thames and Hudson, London 176 pp. (Out of Print)
This book is a useful guide to a number of megalithic sites in Brittany, and is profusely illustrated with black and white photos. While this is a handy book for people travelling in Brittany, it is also informative about types of artifacts found, many of which seem to have astronomical significance or
alignment.

Castledon, Rodney
1987. The Stonehenge People : An Exploration of Life in Neolithic Britain, 4700-2000 BC   Routledge, London.
An excellent book depicting possible life in Neolithic England, backed up with solid research.  There is also some discussion on the megaliths and their purposes. Recommended.

Cornelius, Geoffrey
1997. The Starlore Handbook : An Essential Guide to the Night Sky;  Chronicle Books, San Francisco 176 pp.
This book gives a good overview of the constellations and other celestial objects, concentrating on the Greek myths by which we know most of their names today. Each constellation is illustrated -- the only downside is that through the drawing style it is difficult to distinguish the underlying stars that create the patterns, so this book may be difficult to use for actual stellar observations.

Cornell, James
1981. The First Stargazers : An Introduction to the Origins of Astronomy;  Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. 262 pp. (Out of Print)
The author concentrates on several locations around the world, explaining how stargazing and the
systematic world view obtained from the study of celestial alignments were important in these early cultures.

Hawkins, Gerald S
1988. Stonehenge Decoded; Doubleday and Co., New York. 202 pp. (Out of Print)
An astronomer weighs the evidence that Stonehenge was a giant astronomical observatory in use by 3 different groups of people over a 400 year period starting about 1900 BCE.

Hudson, Travis and Ernest Underhay
1978. Crystals in the Sky : An Intellectual Odyssey Involving Chumash Astronomy, Cosmology and Rock Art (Anthropological Papers : No. 10)t. Ballena Press, PO Box 1366, Socorro, New Mexico 87801. 163 pp. This is one in a series of archaeological papers, and as such may be dry for many readers. However, the research seems comprehensive and well-presented.  The Chumash are a tribe of Native Americans from the Californian Sierra Madre area who had a rich cosmology and who left many relevant artifacts.

Krupp, E.C
1992. Beyond the Blue Horizon : Myths and Legends of the Sun, Moon, Stars, and Planets. Oxford University Press, Oxford, England 387 pp.
Myths, legends, and stories about the stars and planets from cultures around the world.   Eclipses, the Pleiades, the signs of the Zodiac, are all explored and compared, culture to culture.   The author writes engagingly, conveying a strong fascination.  Recommended.

Krupp, E.C.
1997. Skywatchers, Shamans, & Kings : Astronomy and the Archaeology of Power (Wiley Popular Science,).  John Wiley and Sons, New York. 364 pp.
Once again, Krupp looks at cultures around the world, investigating how their view of celestial phenomena color, and are colored by, the need to honor power. That which happened in the remote celestial planes could be harnessed by those in the right place to help sanctify their own authority here on Earth. Recommended.

Malville, J. McKim and Claudia Putnam
1989, 1993. Prehistoric Astronomy in the Southwest;  Johnson Books, Boulder, CO 108 pp.
Southwestern Native American.  Discusses Anasazi, Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Chimney Rock, and other sites.  Rather a dry read.

O'Brien, Christian
1983. Megalithic Odyssey : A Search for the Master Builders of the Bodmin Moor Astronomical Complex of Stone Circles and Giant Cairns; Turnstone Press Unlimited,   Wellingborough, Northamptonshire 176 pp. (Out of Print)
Bodmin Moor lies in Cornwall.  While this book is not easy reading, the author has done extensive
legwork himself to calculate measurements at this site. The author considers the work done here to be related to designs and sites constructed in Ireland as well as in the pre-Sumerian Middle East.

Raymo, Chet
1996. Soul of the Night : An Astronomical Pilgrimage; Prentice-Hall,  Englewood Cliffs, NJ 208 pp.
More a book of reflections on literary and mythologial allusions to the celestial spheres than one on
archaeoastronomy, nonetheless this book fits in here.

Williamson, Ray A
1984. Living the Sky : The Cosmos of the American Indian; University of Oklahoma Press, Norman and London OK 366 pp.
This book discusses what seems to be known about various North American tribal attitudes towards cosmology, both in terms of mythology and the archeological record. It contains many black and white photos and illustrations.

Brecher, Kenneth and Michael Feirtag, ed
1979. The Astronomy of the Ancients. MIT Press, Cambridge MA . (Out of Print)
Eight articles on topics such as Stonehenge, the star Sirius, Plains Indians and medicine wheels, etc.
